Case Study: Net Zero Energy Home
Killingworth, CT
Owners: Mary and George Keithan, Jr.
Completed in November, 2009, This was the first zero-energy home completed in Connecticut, and one of only a few in New England. This stunning new construction, LEED Platinum, single-family home totals 3,600 square feet and sits on 14 acres of land in Killingworth, CT. The concept for this project was to design a home that is not only energy efficient but also fits into the New England landscape. The site includes a cedar shingled farmhouse style house, a post and beam barn, and freestanding stone walls. There are plans to include a working organic vegetable farm, Christmas tree farm and space for up to 50 chickens producing organic eggs.
This home is not only first of its kind in the State of Connecticut, but it is only one of a few in New England. This innovative project forced not only the homeowners but all involved in the creation of the project to make revolutionary changes in their thinking, the products they use, and the processes they had come accustomed to when constructing typical homes. By the end of construction, everyone had realized that anyone can do this. Building an energy efficient home, and in this case a Net Zero Energy home, is no longer an intangible dream.
