UCONN Health Center
Academic Research Building Laboratories
Farmington, CT
This project consisted of the renovation of approximately 25,000 square feet of research laboratory space. The mechanical systems consisted of VAV style heating and air conditioning, fume hood exhaust systems, environmental rooms and DDC temperature controls. Plumbing systems hot water recirculating piping, acid waste piping, RO water piping, gas, air and vacuum systems piping was also provided. Full sprinkler coverage was also included. Electrical systems included lighting, power distribution, emergency power distribution and fire alarms systems. Design of a complete vacuum system for the entire building included vacuum pump, piping and controls was also included. |
Manchester Memorial Hospital
Ambulatory Surgery Suite
Manchester, CT
An underutilized office space within the hospital was renovated to create a new surgical suite for procedures involving short stay or same day discharge. To meet the air quality requirements of an operating suite, the mechanical systems design was revised, providing three air changes per hour of outdoor air with high-efficiency filtration and humidity control. New piping was designed to provide medical gases including oxygen, vacuum and nitrogen systems. Electrical distribution systems were revised to provide critical power, life safety power and isolated power for operating room systems.

Griffin Hospital
Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
Derby, CT
CES provided design services for complete mechanical and electrical renovations to this inpatient psychiatric unit. A new central air handling unit was installed to meet current outdoor air exchange rate requirements. Fan coil units with chilled water and steam coils were utilized to provide zoned climate control throughout the unit.

Hartford Hospital Institute of Living
Multiple Projects
Hartford, CT
Since 1996, CES has provided design services for over 25 projects at this continuing care facility. Projects have spanned from major renovations and additions to fit-outs, life safety code updates and technology improvements. Services were provided for several campus buildings including the Donnelly Building, West Grad Building, Braceland Building, White Hall, Grace Webb School and Massachusetts Cottage. These renovations and fit-outs included clinical space, conference rooms, office areas and common areas. |

Baystate Medical Center
D’Amour Center for Cancer Care
CES provided full commissioning services and control revisions for this new cancer center. Major mechanical systems were commissioned once during the facility’s first heating season, and again during its first cooling season. Subsequent revisions to the HVAC control systems allowed for higher energy efficiency and streamlined system operations.

Tower One / Tower East
New Haven, CT
A portion of this 20 story retirement community building was being upgraded for use as an assisted living facility. Renovations include an office area on the first floor and conversion of four floors from congregated living to assisted living. Fire protection, plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems were modified, as well as telephone and data systems. A dining room addition of 5,600 square feet was also part of the project scope. |
The Sarah Pierce

The mechanical systems for this new assisted living facility consist of a two-pipe heating cooling system supplying vertical fan coil units located in the patient rooms, as well as air handling units located in the attics serving common spaces. The HVAC systems also include a new fuel oil storage tank, chiller system, boiler plant and an extensive leak detection and product inventory system. A 13R fire protection system provides full coverage throughout the entire facility. The electrical design includes a new emergency generator, new emergency power distribution, regular power distribution, lighting systems, emergency lighting systems, nurses call systems, and fire alarm systems. Selected lighting fixtures were closely coordinated with architectural components to ensure proper lighting levels for residents and staff. |
UMASS Memorial Medical Center

This fast-paced project was in response to a growing research program at UMASS Medical School. A complete interior “gut” of a below grade cardiac rehab area was required for the MRI, Angio, and Lab spaces comprising this project. All new HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, and Control systems were designed by CES, to compliment the high-end nature of this state of the are research facility. |

Providence VA Medical Center - Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
Providence, RI
This medical center treats over 150,000 Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts veterans annually. In conjunction with Brown University Medical School, the inpatient psychiatric unit serves as a research and treatment center. Renovations to this unit include a new comprehensive mechanical system for cooling, heating and fresh air requirements. Supplemental base board heating was installed using the existing hot water system. Two new isolation suites were incorporated using the existing dedicated exhaust system and HEPA filtration. The existing medical gasses were extended to accommodate the fit-out which included compressed air, vacuum and oxygen. The existing sprinkler system was also extended to accommodate the new space layout |
Anna Jacques Hospital
Emergency Department

Founded in 1884 as a 13-bed general hospital, Anna Jacques Hospital is now a 123-bed acute care facility serving the coastal Merrimack Valley area just south of the New Hampshire border. The latest addition provides a new entrance and a “fast-track” service area for the emergency department, expediting minor injuries and illnesses. New building systems for the addition include a 100% outside air system for cooling, heating, and fresh air needs. This constant volume system will utilize the existing chilled water system and heated water from the existing boilers. New exhaust was installed to accommodate the addition requirements. A new electrical service upgrade was installed for the entire facility. The fire alarm, nurse call and paging system was extended to the addition, along with power distribution to maintain critical hospital functions under any conditions. |
Griffin Hospital
Emergency, Clinical Laboratory and Radiology Departments

In tandem with the construction of a new stand-alone ambulatory care center, Griffin Hospital is renovating and expanding several departments at it’s main campus building. The renovation project will include many building system upgrades such as revised mechanical design, power distribution upgrades and new life safety equipment. |

The Bidding is underway for this new stand-alone ambulatory care center. Designed to incorporate Griffin’s Planetree philosophy of patient-oriented care, this new facility will include elements that provide a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for radiation and oncology patients. Indirect lighting, climate controls and sound masking will characterize this ambulatory center as one of distinction for putting patients first. |
